~ v 1 to do something to try and stop a quarrel, or a war, or to deal with a problem, especially one that you are not directly involved in + in  (The police don't usually like to intervene in disputes between husbands and wives. | The Federal Reserve Bank had to intervene to protect the value of the dollar.) 2 if an event intervenes it happens in a way that prevents or interrupts something else  (He was just establishing his career when the war intervened.) 3 if a period of time intervenes, it comes between two events
